GHS Varsity ties Roosevelt, 2-2

Despite missing seven varsity players due to a school trip, Garfield’s varsity girls soccer team took Roosevelt by surprise on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium, earning a 2-2 tie.

Roosevelt scored in the first minute of play when Tessa Vollrath knocked in an assist from Jessie Ayers. The first half ended with the Rough Riders ahead.

A few minutes into the start of the second half, Kelsi Billedo tied it up by scoring Garfield’s first goal off a breakaway on an assist from Lashonne Wells.  Ten minutes later, Roosevelt went ahead again on a goal by Liz Bloden with an assist from Vollarth.

Garfield came roaring back with a thrilling finish, however, as Belledo knocked in an equalizer off another breakaway at the 70:00 mark on an assist from Wells.

The two teams then played 10 minutes of scoreless overtime, and the game finished in a draw. The contest left Garfield with a 0-1-1 (0-1-4) record. Roosevelt is now 0-1-2 (3-2-3).

Earlier in the day, Garfield’s JV team beat Roosevelt, 2-0.

The Lady Bulldogs’ next game will be at Memorial Stadium against Ballard at 7:30 on Thursday, Sept. 30. Ballard is 0-3-0 in 4A Conference play, and 0-6-3 overall. The Beavers’ top scorers are Jordan Travis, Crickett Harber and Maria Tsagalakis, with 2 goals each. — Audrey Sheffield

Garfield varsity lost its final game of the season on Tuesday night to Woodinville HS, 2-0. It was another in a string of very well-played and hard fought battles.

MacKenzie Hughes scored Woodinville’s first goal unassisted at 35:00.  The Falcons’ second goal came at 56:00 on a strike by Brianna Sweeney, assisted by Stine Schoening.

Garfield ended the season at 1-10-0 (2-11-1) while Woodinville finished at 8-2-1 (11-2-2).

Issaquah won the KingCo 4A season title with a 10-1 record, followed by Eastlake (9-2), Skyline (9-2) and Woodinville.

Individual season scoring totals for the Bulldogs:

Ava Lewis: 6 goals, 2 assists
Lily Hansen: 3 goals, 3 assists
Tory Sheffield: 1 goal, 1 assist
Olivia Carlson: 1 goal

Garfield kept all but one game of the season very tight, and built a solid foundation for more success in 2010.

Garfield varsity girls lost another hard-fought game on Thursday, 3-0, to Issaquah HS.

Issaquah, which is leading the KingCo 4A this season, scored their first goal in the second minute of play as Margaret Rauch knocked in a ball with an assist from Kristen Maris.

Garfield’s defense held tough for the rest of the first half, but Issaquah came out swinging in the second half. First Dayna Talley scored on an assist by Alyssa Eglund at 48:00, then Kelsey Ford scored on an assist by Kristen Maris at 57:00.

Garfield had some great chances on breathtaking breakaways by Tory Sheffield, with assists from Lily Hansen and other teammates, but Issaquah keeper Brooke Miller stopped all attempts en route to a shutout.

The Bulldogs’ record slipped to 1-9-0 (2-10-1), while the Eagles improved to 9-1-0 (12-2-0).


It was senior night for the Bulldogs. Honored were, from left, Sonia Giebel, Sinclair Manning, Laura Munoz, Lily Hansen, Tory Sheffield and Laura West.


On the other end of the age spectrum, the team’s three freshmen were excited to see the celebration of the upperclassmen. From left, they were Jane Markman, Caroline Sheffield and Ava Lewis.

The Bulldogs’ final game of the season will be Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Woodinville HS. Temperature is expected to be 46F at game time, with a 90% chance of light rain.

The Falcons are 7-2-1 (10-2-2). In their last four games, they beat Roosevelt, 2-0; beat Ballard, 2-0; lost to Eastlake, 3-2; and beat Skyline, 1-0. Their top scorer is Stine Schoening, with 9 goals and 3 assists this year, and Brianna Sweeney, who has recorded 6 goals and 3 assists.

Garfield varsity lost another tough game on Thursday night, 3-1, to Roosevelt HS.

Roosevelt scored first at 33:50 on an unassisted goal by Sarah Klein. Garfield then tied it up when Lashonne Wells scored on an assist by Tory Sheffield at 44:00.

But late in the second half, the Roughriders added two more goals: Selena Boro scored on an assist by Jessie Ayers at 53:30, and then Ayers knocked one in unassisted at 79:15.

The Bulldogs’ record fell to 1-7-0 (2-8-1) while the Roughriders improved to 4-4-0 (6-7-0).


Garfield next plays away at Bothell at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Cougars, shown above, are 0-6-2 (2-8-2) this season. Their last four games were a 5-1 loss to Redmond, a 1-0 loss to Roosevelt, a 1-1 tie with Lake Washington and a 1-1 tie with Ballard. Their top scorers and assist leaders are Sydney Howard, Devon Eckberg and Ali Cundiff.

Temperature at game time is forecast to be 56F, with a 10% chance of rain.

The Garfield girls varsity soccer team lost a hard-fought battle against Ballard, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs slipped to 1-6-0 (2-7-1). Ballard improved to 2-3-2 (3-6-3).

The game’s lone goal was made at the 7:00 mark, when Cassie Winters scored on a Maria Tsagalakis assist.

Garfield next plays Roosevelt HS at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night at the Nathan Hale HS Stadium. (Directions). [ The Seattle Times website has this game scheduled for Memorial Stadium.]

Temperature is expected to be a balmy 64F, with a 60% chance of rain.

Roosevelt is 3-4-0 and 5-7-0. Its leading scorers are Jessie Ayers and Robin Vieira. In its last four games, the Rough Riders beat Bothell, 1-0; beat Ballard, 2-1; lost to Eastlake, 2-1; and lost to Skyline, 4-1.

Garfield falls to Eastlake

Garfield varsity was defeated by Eastlake HS, 7-0, on Thursday in Sammamish.

The Bulldogs’ record slipped to 1-5-0 (2-6-1), while the Wolves’ record improved to 5-1-0 (7-3-1).

Eastlake earned its first goal at 15:00 on a kick by Allie Behan with an assist from Lindsay Elston. Two minutes later, Elston scored wih an assist from Beahan.  Elston scored again at 28:00 with an assist from Beahan, and then Beahan scored unassisted a minute later.

At the 31:00 mark, Candice Osei-Agyemang kicked in a goal with an assist from Jaclyn Softli. And at the 44:00 mark, Courtney Pixler scored with an assist from Kellie Shreve. The Wolves’ scoring finished with a goal by Abby Frenkel with an assist from Softli at 63:00.  Wolves’ keeper Bryce Kennedy earned the shutout.


Garfield’s next game is 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, against Ballard HS at Memorial Stadium.

Ballard is 1-3-2 (2-6-3) this season, in ninth place in the KingCo 4A standings.  Their last four games were a 2-1  loss vs. Roosevelt, a 1-1 tie with Ballard, a 4-2 loss to Eastlake and a 1-0 loss to Skyline. Their top scorers are Kat Anesini, with 5, and Sara Ives, with 3.

Temperature is forecast to be in the high 40s, with a 60% chance of rain.

Garfield varsity lost a heart-breaker to Skyline HS on Tuesday night, 1-0, at Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs matched up extremely well against the league-leading Spartans, shutting them out in the second half. And they would have tied if only a well-struck ball by senior Tory Sheffield had not glanced off the goal’s crossbar.


Skyline’s lone goal game at the 39:00 mark by Shea O’Donnell, with an assist by Jackie Wilson. The Spartans, who have averaged 2.8 goals per game, took several more shots but all were repelled by Bulldog keeper Savannah Billedo.

Garfield’s record is now 1-4-0 and 2-4-1. Skyline is 5-0-0 and 9-1-0.


The Bulldogs’ next game is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Eastlake HS. (Directions) Temperature is forecast to be in the high 40s, with a light wind and no rain.

The Eastlake Wolves are 4-1-0 and 6-3-1. Their leading scorer is Kelly Morro, with 4 goals, and Allie Behan, with 3. Their assists leader is Lindsay Elston, with 4.
