Garfield loses to Issaquah, 4-1

Garfield High’s varsity girls soccer team lost to Issaquah High, 4-1, on Thursday on the plateau.

Issaquah forward Audrey Thomas kicked off the scoring with a goal unassisted at 11:00. Fourteen minutes later, Thomas tapped the ball to Deanna Dakar, who slammed in the second goal for the Eagles, making the score 2-0. And then Thomas knocked in another goal off an assist by Delany Foreman at 33:00.

In the second half, Dakar scored another goal at 68:00 of an assist by Sarah Leland.

And finally, at 87:00, Maria Carlson got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a brilliant, slashing run down the right sideline and shot with her right foot off a deft assist by Ava Lewis.

The game took Garfield’s record down to 2-3-4 (5-5-5) and lifted Issaquah’s record up to 7-1-2 (9-4-2).

The Bulldogs play next against Newport High with the last berth in the conference playoffs up for grabs. Newport is 3-5-1 (5-8-2) .

Garfield ties Bothell, 1-1

The Garfield High girls soccer team continued its remarkable season at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night by playing Bothell High to a tightly contested 1-1 draw.

The tie put the Bulldogs solidly in the hunt for a playoff berth, lifting their record to 2-2-4 (5-4-5) and a lock on sixth place in the 11-team league.

Garfield got the scoring off on the right foot just two minutes into the game when Ava Lewis slammed in a shot off an assist by Caroline Sheffield.

Bothell answered with an equalizer two minutes later — and then the score remained 1-1 over the rest of regulation play and two five-minute extra periods.

Garfield celebrated Senior Night with a pre-game ceremony acknowledging the contributions of its eldest players. Seniors Emily Proulx, Devon McDonald and Rachel Blazevic were commemorated with comments by teammates and given gifts of a team photo and flowers. The girls’ parents joined them on the field for the presentation.

Garfield next plays at Issaquah on Thursday at 7:30 pm. The Eagles are 6-1-2 (8-4-2) and occupy second place in the KingCo 4-A standings. The Bulldogs’ final game of the regular season will be at home against Newport on October 25.

Garfield ties Woodinville, 0-0

The Garfield High girls soccer team battled Woodinville to a 0-0 tie on October 13 at Pop Keeney Field on the eastside.

The two evenly matched teams played fiercely to a scoreless tie in the regulation 80 minutes. They then amped up their focus from there to play two intense extra five-minute periods before the contest ended at a draw.

Sarah Whitney and Devon McDonald recorded the shutout in goal for Garfield, while keeper Molly Stinson logged the shutout for Woodinvile.

Whitney and McDonald have now combined for five shutouts this season — the most among KingCo 4A teams this season.

Garfield’s smothering defense managed to blunt the conference’s top scorer, Sophie Chakato, who has scored 11 goals this year.

The contest left Garfield’s record at 2-2-3 (5-4-4) while Woodinville’s record ran to 4-2-1 (7-2-2).

Garfield edged by Skyline, 2-1

The Garfield High varsity girls soccer team lost a heart-breaker to Skyline High, 2-1, on a rainy Tuesday night in Sammamish.

The Bulldogs battled the Spartans — who are undefeated in 9 games this year and the top-ranked 4A team in the state – to a scoreless tie in the first half.

Skyline got on the scoreboard first after the break with a goal at the 48:00 mark.

But Garfield answered back quickly at 51:00 when Heather Kovar fed a deft pass to Kelsey Billedo, who scored the equalizer with a short shot in front of the goal.

Skyline wrested the lead back 15 minutes later by scoring off a corner kick.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to a record of 2-3-2 (5-4-3) while the Spartans’ record improved to 5-0-1 (9-0-2).

Garfield next plays at Woodinville High on Thursday. The Falcons are 4-2-0 (7-2-1).

Skyline JV 2, Garfield JV 0

The Garfield JV team lost to a hard charging Skyline JV team, 2-0, in a windswept contest on Tuesday afternoon. The game was interrupted twice by serious injury.

The first occurred at the Garfield goal, as shown above, with Sophie Segel avoiding serious injury. The Skyline forward was helped off the field.

Then in the final minutes of the game, Garfield keeper Clare Fuget was injured in a similar collision. She is recovering. – Reporting by Lou Cuevas

Garfield loses to Holy Names, 2-0

The Garfield High varsity girls soccer team lost a hard-fought, non-conference game to Holy Names Academy on Saturday afternoon on their home turf, 2-0.

The Cougars – one of the top-ranked teams in the state in the 3A division — took a 1-0 lead in the first half, and sealed their shutout with another goal in the second half.

The game left Garfield’s record at 2-1-2 (5-3-3). The Bulldogs’ next game is at Skyline at 7:30 on Tuesday night.

JV LOSES TO HOLY NAMES, 1-0

The Garfield girls soccer JV team played a tight game on Saturday against Holy Names on the GHS turf.

The only goal scored in the 1-0 loss was a controversial one, in that the Holy Names striker appeared to interfere with a ball downed by the Garfield keeper.

The stalwart GHS defense was anchored by sophomore Claire Lowry and freshman twins Brita and Molly McAuliffe. JV’s record now stands at 0-4-1 ( 4-6-1 ) — Lou Cuevas

Garfield loses to Eastlake, 1-0

The Garfield High varsity girls soccer team narrowly lost to Eastlake High, 1-0, on Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

The game was locked in a well played scoreless tie until the 36th minute of the second half, when Marisa Katagiri knocked in a goal for the eastside team.

Bryce Kennedy earned the shutout for the Wolves.

The loss left Garfield with a 2-1-2 (5-2-3) record, and boosted Eastlake to 2-0-3 (4-1-6).

The Bulldogs’ next league game will be at Skyline at 7:30 pm on Tuesday. The Spartans lead the league with a 4-0-1 (8-0-2) record this year.

Garfield shuts out Redmond, 2-0

The Garfield High varsity girls soccer team blanked Redmond High, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium to move into fourth place in the KingCo 4A standings.

Heather Kovar got the scoring off on the right foot for the Bulldogs at the 20:00 mark off an assist from Ana Rae Miller.

Anna Duncan then completed the scoring for the night with a hard-hit shot 14 minutes later, unassisted.

Garfield’s smothering defense went on to shut down the Mustangs in the second half to seal the team’s second league victory.

Goal keeper Sarah Whitney earned the shutout.

The win boosted Garfield’s record to 2-0-2 (5-1-3) and dropped Remond to 2-2-1 (3-4-3).

The Bulldogs next play Eastlake at home in Memorial Stadium on Thursday night at 7:30 pm. Eastlake is 1-0-3 (3-1-6) and is most recently coming off a 0-0 tie with Inglemoor.

Junior Varsity Game

Lou Cuevas, reporting: After taking a 1-0 first half lead on an Emma D’Allessandro goal, and dominating play, the Garfield JV were caught by wave after wave of Mustang attacks in the second half and lost 4-1.

Injuries, illness and school work have prevented a full squad from taking the field the last few games, leaving coach Megan Price with few subs. The JVs are now 0-3-1 ( 4-4-1 ) with league power Eastlake on Thursday and Holy Names on a rare Saturday morning.

Garfield ties Ballard, 0-0

The Garfield High girls soccer team battled fiercely to a 0-0 tie with Ballard on Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

Both sides had scoring chances that were turned back by stellar defense.

After 80 minutes of regulation play, the game went into two five minute tie-breaker halves. Despite a flurry of shots on both sides, the game still ended without a score.

The result lifted Garfield’s record to 1-0-2 (4-1-3) and put Ballard’s record at 0-3-1 (1-4-2).

Garfield is now ranked sixth in KingCo 4A out of 11 teams.

The Bulldogs’ next contest will be Tuesday at home against Redmond High at 7:30 p.m. Redmond has a 2-1-1 (3-3-3) record and is coming off a 3-2 loss to Issaquah.

Garfield beats Roosevelt, 3-1

GHS varsity in action under the lights at Memorial on Tuesday

The Garfield High varsity girls soccer team beat arch-rival Roosevelt High, 3-1, on Tuesday under the lights at Memorial Stadium.

Hannah Lewis got the Bulldogs off on the right foot early in the game with a sensational shot over the goalkeeper’s head at the 4:00 minute mark.

Annie Zwaschka then quickly followed up with a slashing boot from the right side in the thirteenth minute of play.

Jane Markman next delivered one of her trademark long, low, arcing passes from the left corner, and Heather Kovar connected in the box for a goal at the 48:00 mark to make the score 3-0.

Roosevelt scored its lone goal at 67:00 with a knuckleball that fluttered just out of the Bulldog goalkeeper’s reach.

The win boosted Garfield’s record to 1-0-1 (4-1-2) and dropped Roosevelt to 0-2 (0-5-3).

The Bulldogs next play an away game on Thursday against Ballard at 7:30 pm at Memorial Stadium. The Beavers are 0-3-0 (1-4-1) this season.

In the JV game, Roosevelt beat Garfield 1-0 after putting up a valiant effort with no subs available and even briefly playing a girl down due to injury. The front line tried, but couldn’t crack a four-deep Roughrider back line. The JV next plays Ballard on Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

Garfield shuts out Seattle Academy, 4-0

The Garfield High girls soccer team trounced Seattle Academy on Friday night at Starfire Stadium, 4-0, behind the stellar performance of sophomore forward Heather Kovar.

Kovar scored three times in the non-conference contest: Once off a booming pass out of the left corner by Jane Markman, once on a deft touch in the middle by Ava Lewis, and once more unassisted.

The other GHS goal rocketed from the foot of sophomore striker Murphie Mathers off an assist by junior mid-fielder Anna Duncan.

Garfield goalies Sarah Whitney and Devon McDonald shared the shutout.

The resulted lifted Garfield to 0-0-1 (3-1-2) and left Seattle Academy at 4-1-0 (4-2-1).

In the preliminary match, the Garfield JV squad, though depleted by injury, proved inspirational with their own 3-0 shutout.

Keeper Clare Fuget and emergency substitute Maria Cuevas recorded the shutout, and Lilyrosa Stroum continued her scoring streak.
